London:
A low-calorie diet is just as effective as drastic stomach surgery at
reducing diabetics` blood glucose levels, according to new research.
It
has long been known that patients who undergo gastric operations to
limit their eating see a dramatic improvement in their diabetes.
But
the new report has found that patients with Type 2 diabetes who simply
follow the same strict diet as that after surgery are just as likely to
reap the benefits, the Daily Express reported.
Ildiko Lingvay, M.D., an assistant professor
of internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical
Center who helped conduct the study, said the reduction of patients`
caloric intake following bariatric surgery is what leads to the major
improvements in diabetes, not the surgery itself.
